It is Serratia marcescens, an airborne bacterium that produces a red to pink pigment called prodigiosin and thrives specifically in the warm, humid conditions that August creates. The distinction matters because bacteria and fungi respond to different treatments and different prevention strategies.
Serratia marcescens colonizes surfaces by forming a biofilm, a structured bacterial community embedded in a self-produced polysaccharide matrix, which makes it significantly more resistant to cleaning than free-floating bacteria.
